PLEASE NOTE: NJ Boating bill 2624 was signed into law on January 9, 2006. The law applies to all NJ Boaters' age 13 and older who operate power vessels.

 

Operators holding a current US Coast Guard Operator's License are not required to complete a New Jersey boat safety course.

Schedule of Completion of Mandatory Boating Safety Courses:

Persons born in 1969 or later must possess a Boating Safety Certificate by June1, 2006.

Persons born in 1959 or later must possess a Boating Safety Certificate by June1, 2007.

Persons born in 1949 or later must possess a Boating Safety Certificate by June1, 2008.

ALL Persons who wish to operate a power vessel must possess a Boating Safety Certificate by June 1, 2009

 

The NJ BOAT OPERATOR LICENSE (fee for using non-tidal waters in NJ ) from Division of Motor Vehicle is NOT SUFFICIENT OR LEGAL without this certificate.

Important News: 

Beginning January 1, 2007, both 121.5 and 243 MHz Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) are prohibited from use in both commercial and recreational watercraft. Boaters wishing to have an emergency rescue beacon aboard their vessel must have a digital 406 MHz model.
